Significant Other
What punishments do you deserve for the sins you have committed? In some cases, visualization helps us learn our lessons. For example, to learn prepositions, many are taught to correlate the actions of a squirrel in proximity to a tree. The squirrel can be near, by, for, around, or against a tree. Which has more significance, the squirrel or its proximity when the role of the tree is replaced by murder?
Chivas Regal Sinclair finds herself with plenty of time to ponder whether the actions leading to her current circumstances were done for, to be near, because of, or against her. The bed of life never allowed her and drama to share separate pillows. A jury was about to decide whether the tattered splotches she used to build a life would be replaced by a prison uniform.
Amazing how many times we judge others with only a morsel of their backstory. The value he added to her life was minimal. If she had to be punished for a past relationship, why couldn’t it be significant? Oh, yeah, she reminded herself, she was already doing life for that one.
The meal was over. Dishes were cleared and cleaned. He never took his eyes off her. The journey was no longer on her face but underneath her skin. Long showers hadn’t helped her relax although she tried to fake the effects. It probably would have worked with anyone else.
He knew her. They met under duress all those years ago. He was the only one who would notice. Slowly, walking to the stereo, he chose songs of comfort for the surround sound. Then, approached Chivas and wrapped her in his embrace.
“What are you doing sir? Are you seducing me?” She laughed nervously. He didn’t.
“You’re safe now.”
“I know that’s why I came here. You’ve still got enough artillery around here to rob the Federal Reserve Bank!”
“You’re safe now.” He wasn’t going to let her attempt at sarcasm avoid the moment. He touched her cheek and looked into her eyes. Again, he repeated the words. Chivas paused for a moment as though a verification of sincerity was necessary.
“You’re safe now. You can release it.” A sigh of exasperation slipped from her quivering lips . Being known as a strong and capable woman can be as much a curse as a blessing.
It usually means no one checks on you because your history says you’ll find a way. When someone does check, you question their sincerity. There are times when the rhetorical “you’ll be okay,” is worse than no acknowledgment of your struggle.
